Masters Awards — 2025 Readers’ Choice British Mas Masters Awards — 2025 Readers’ Choice

British Masters Male Athlete of the Year

Colin Spivey — Named the top masters man in the UK for 2025.

The other top male masters contenders: Mark Symes, John Wright.

British Masters Female Athlete of the Year

Sarah Roberts — Voted the top masters female athlete for 2025.

Why These Wins Matter

The masters categories showcase phenomenal performances by athletes who continue to compete — and excel — well beyond the “elite prime.”

It’s a powerful reminder: age doesn’t have to be a barrier. These athletes demonstrate strength, endurance and dedication.

Recognising masters performers helps celebrate the entire spectrum of athletic endeavour — not just elite youth or professional careers — and honours lifelong commitment to sport.
Question: Your session is 4x300 @80% with a walk Question:

Your session is 4x300 @80% with a walk back recovery. It's a cold night in November and you're training alone. Fast reps in the sun with maximum recovery have become a distant memory and you have no competitions planned until New Year...

What motivates you? What keeps you going on that last rep when there's no one there to judge your efforts?

Motivation comes in many forms:

Intrinsic - meaning from within. Your goals are enjoyment or personal accomplishment. It doesn't matter where you place. You did your best and that's what counts. Or it could be a feeling - whipping off the bend and into the straight. You chase mindfulness.

Extrinsic - external factors come into play; medals, records and the perceived acceptance of peers.

Amotivation - rare, if probably nonexistent, at masters level. Those competing through obligation, while lacking the desire to actually do so.

Integrated Regulation - an athlete motivated by purpose. Getting fit, adding longevity to their life, setting an example for their children.

Identified Regulation - similar to integrated but more honed towards a specific event. It's extrinsic because the motivation relates to the goal, rather than intrinsic satisfaction.

Introjected Regulation - an internal motivator but potentially one with a negative genesis. You might run through a sense of guilt or shame.

External Regulation - similarly driven from a less sustainable place, this motivation comes from perceived external reward or punishment. An example being, running to maintain a place on the team.

Any of these types of motivation resonate with you?
