What a 70% age grade means — and how to get to 80%

A 70% age grade is a significant achievement — competitive club level. But 80% (national class) is closer than you think.

What 70% actually represents

At 70%, you’re performing at 70% of the world record level for your age and event. You place well at local events, you’ve got a structured approach to training, and you take your athletics seriously.

The gap between 70% and 80%

The jump from 70% to 80% takes you from competitive club to national class — the threshold at which you’d be competitive at national masters championships. Most of the gap can be closed with targeted training improvements rather than raw fitness gains.

What typically limits athletes at 70%

  • Event-specific strength deficits — particularly relevant for sprinters and jumpers
  • Insufficient speed work — many masters athletes train too conservatively
  • Poor race tactics — especially in middle distance events
  • Inadequate recovery management — limiting training quality and consistency
  • Technical issues that become more impactful at higher performance levels

A roadmap from 70% to 80%

Athletes in the 70% range who follow a bespoke masters programme typically improve by 8–15% within a competitive season.
