Why is Sarah Roberts Taking Part?

Read about her worldly ambitions in her own words:

I’ve entered the BMAF 10,000m and One-Mile Championships on 24th May because I love discovering what’s still possible. I only laced up my first pair of running shoes at age 67, shuffling round parkrun with a walk-run strategy. After a couple of years I joined Dacorum Athletic Club and plucked up the courage to enter an 800m race (the first time I had ever set foot on a track). My opposition was a group of talented teenagers who disappeared into the distance, but my time was reasonable for my age and it gave me a taste for track running. Unfortunately COVID came along and ruined any running progression for a while. When running resumed I was told about Masters events and 3 years ago I joined Southern Counties Veterans Athletics Club and represented them and 2 years ago I entered British Masters events. This has led to a gradual improvement so that in the last year I have run personal bests at every distance I have raced, and to world indoor records for W75 at 800m, 1500m, and 3000m. I have also obtained world bests for W75 in 5k road, 5 mile road, and 10k road and also for W70 in 5k road. This is surprising, even to me, and hopefully I can go further.

The next goal is to translate those indoor track records to outdoors – and to find out what I can do over the mile and 10,000m. The camaraderie of my Dacorum Club and weekly interval training together with parkruns remain the backbone of my training; (each Saturday reminds me that improving your own PB is open to anyone, at any age). If my story persuades even one person to pin on a number for the first time, it will be every bit as satisfying as another medal or record. See you in Oxford”.
