Just a few days to the European MAsters Athletics Marathon championship Jyvaskyla 2025.
Finally the podium medals are unveiled, and there will be wooden medals. Why wooden? The reason has been clarified by the LOC President Markku Koistinen:
“Wooden medals are made from certified Finnish birch. Unlike metal or plastic, a wooden medal is crafted from a renewable and ecological raw material. After use, a wooden medal can be easily recycled as energy, unlike medals made from metal alloys, which end up as hazardous waste.Switching from metal to wood is a concrete and clear act of responsibility: the environmental load is significantly reduced, the carbon footprint is smaller, and the raw material comes from local, responsibly managed forests. In addition, wood reflects Finnish traditions and nature-oriented values, making the medal a culturally valuable symbol for our competition.”We all can contribute to make our planet a better place to live. See you in Finland!
