Most periodisation models — the way training is structured into phases across a season — were written with a young, rapidly-adapting body in mind. Build a base, layer on intensity, taper, peak, repeat. It’s a good model. It’s just not built for what changes once you’re managing a training history that spans decades instead of one season.
If you’re still following the same shape of plan you used at 25, and it’s not delivering the way it used to, the plan probably isn’t wrong for athletes generally — it’s wrong for you specifically, right now.
What actually changes with age
The physiology here isn’t mysterious, but it’s rarely translated into practical programming advice. A few of the biggest shifts:
Recovery windows lengthen. The same session that needed 48 hours at 25 might genuinely need 72–96 hours at 45. This isn’t a discipline problem or a fitness problem — it’s a real physiological shift in how quickly tissue repairs and adapts.
Injury risk concentrates differently. Masters athletes tend to see more tendon and connective tissue issues relative to pure muscular ones, and old injuries have a way of resurfacing under load patterns that never bothered them before. Training that ignores this accumulates risk quietly, until it doesn’t.
Power and speed qualities decline faster than aerobic capacity. For sprinters and power athletes in particular, this changes what “maintenance” versus “development” work should look like — you often need to protect neuromuscular sharpness more deliberately than you need to protect endurance.
Adaptation is still very real — it’s just paced differently. This is the part that gets lost. Masters athletes absolutely still improve, sometimes significantly. The mistake is expecting that improvement to arrive on a 25-year-old’s timeline.
Why generic periodisation breaks down
A standard block periodisation plan assumes you can stack intensity relatively aggressively because recovery keeps pace. Once recovery slows, that stacking either doesn’t produce the intended adaptation, or it produces the adaptation alongside accumulating fatigue that never fully clears — which is where niggles turn into injuries and good blocks turn into forced rest weeks.
The instinct is often to just do less of the same plan. That’s better than nothing, but it’s a blunt fix. The better approach is restructuring the plan itself around how you actually recover and adapt now, not around a generic proportional scale-down of what you did a decade ago.
What masters-appropriate periodisation looks like in practice
Longer recovery built into the microcycle, not squeezed around it. Rather than a standard hard-hard-easy weekly pattern, many masters athletes do better on patterns that give genuinely more space between high-intensity sessions — even if that means fewer quality sessions per week overall.
Undulating rather than strictly linear loading. Instead of steadily ramping intensity toward a peak, alternating load more deliberately gives connective tissue and the nervous system more chance to consolidate gains between pushes.
Explicit injury-risk monitoring built into the plan, not bolted on after something goes wrong. Tracking load alongside how the body is actually responding — not just ticking off planned sessions — is what catches problems while they’re still niggles.
Season structure built around fewer, better-chosen peaks. Trying to peak as often as you did at 25 usually means never fully peaking at all. Masters athletes often perform best building toward one or two genuinely prioritised competitions rather than treating every meet as equally important.
Long-term progression tracked in years, not weeks. Because week-to-week variation is noisier at this stage (life, recovery, minor niggles all have more influence), the real signal is in the trend across a season or several seasons — which is exactly why accurate longitudinal tracking matters more here than it does for younger athletes.
The upside nobody talks about enough
None of this is a story about decline management. Masters athletes who train against a plan built for how their body actually works — rather than fighting a generic plan that assumes they’re 25 — often see genuinely strong, sustained improvement, precisely because they stop cycling through the injury-setback-restart loop that an ill-fitted plan tends to produce.
The goal isn’t training less ambitiously. It’s training more precisely.
