Shot put is often described as one of the more age-friendly throwing events, and for good reason — technique and timing consistently outweigh raw strength once an athlete has built a sound technical base. Masters throwers tend to accumulate a specific set of technical drift patterns over years of competing, and correcting them is usually where the biggest, fastest distance gains are found — well before any strength program changes.

The single most common technical fault in masters shot put is a degraded power position at the moment of release — hips arriving late, or the throwing arm starting the push before the hips and legs have finished their rotation. This is often not a strength issue; it’s a sequencing issue that develops gradually as an athlete unconsciously compensates for reduced explosive leg drive by initiating the arm push earlier to “help.”

The fix is sequencing work, not strength work: hips and legs first, chest and shoulder second, arm last. Standing throws (no glide or rotation, just the power position through release) are the best drill for isolating and rebuilding this sequence without the added complexity of the entry technique.

Glide vs. Rotational: Which Suits Masters Athletes Better?

Both techniques remain viable for masters throwers, but the demands differ:

  • The glide relies more on a strong, well-timed leg drive across the circle and is generally more forgiving on the lower back
  • The rotational technique can generate more distance at a high skill level but places greater demand on hip mobility and balance, and technical breakdowns are often harder to self-diagnose

For masters throwers who competed at a younger age using the rotational technique, it’s often still worth keeping — but expect to invest more in mobility maintenance to preserve the technique’s integrity. Athletes newer to the event, or those managing lower back sensitivity, often find the glide easier to maintain technically as they age.

The Finish: Where Distance Quietly Disappears

A shortened or rushed finish position is extremely common in masters shot put and is frequently invisible to the thrower without video review. The release angle and follow-through determine a meaningful share of total distance, and a finish that’s cut short — chest not fully extended, throwing arm not reaching full extension, reverse (recovery step) skipped or rushed — bleeds distance that no amount of extra strength training will recover.

Filming from the side at every training session, even briefly, is one of the highest-value habits a masters thrower can build. Comparing release angle and extension across sessions makes finish degradation visible early, before it becomes an ingrained habit.

Managing Load as a Masters Thrower

Shot put technical work is comparatively low-impact on joints compared to jumping or sprinting events, but the explosive nature of full-intensity throws still carries injury risk, particularly for the lower back, shoulder, and wrist.

  • 2-3 technical sessions per week, mixing standing throws, partial-approach throws, and full-technique throws
  • 1 dedicated mobility session, prioritising hip rotation, thoracic spine rotation, and shoulder mobility
  • Building in a genuine taper before competition — masters throwers often benefit from a slightly longer taper window than younger athletes
