THE UNITED STATES MASTERS THE POLE JUMP, CANADA THE SHOT PUT AND CUBA THE TRIPLE JUMP
The women’s teams of the USA, Canada and Cuba excelled in the outcome of the athletics field events of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
USA’s Bridget Williams won the gold medal in the pole vault final with a mark of 4.60 meters, this being her first Pan American medal in her sports career. With the execution of her best jump she surpassed Venezuela’s Robeilys Peinado who registered a mark of 4.55 meters and took the silver medal. The bronze went to Cuba’s Aslin Quiala, who performed her best jump with a mark of 4.40 meters in her first appearance at the Pan American Games.
“I’m very happy. It has been very special since it is my first victory for Team USA and my first Pan American Games. So to come here and execute what we expected is very special to me. Also, it is my first time in South America, in Chile. It is a beautiful country and I hope to return, everyone has been very good,” said Bridget Williams.
In shot put, Canada’s athlete Sarah Mitton won the gold medal with a mark of 19.19 meters and won her first Pan American medal of her sporting career. The silver medal went to Rosa Ramírez, representative of the Dominican Republic, with a throw of 17.99 meters. Tthe winner of the bronze medal was the American Adelaide Aquilla with a mark of 17.73 meters.
“I feel very good. Many things have changed in the last four years. I finished sixth at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. I have worked hard to be a dominant figure on the field, now I am very excited and happy to be in Chile with a gold medal hanging around my neck,” said Sarah Mitton.
Finally, Cuban Leyanis Perez was the winner of the gold medal in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 14.75 meters on her third attempt. The silver medal went to his compatriot Liadagmis Povea, who with a jump of 14.41 meters obtained his second Pan American medal, after obtaining the bronze medal at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Meanwhile, Dominica athlete Thea LaFond took the bronze medal with a score of 14.25 meters. LaFond wrote a new chapter in Dominica’s history, as her bronze medal represents only the country’s fourth in the Pan American Games and its first medal since Guadalajara 2011.
“I am very satisfied to obtain my first Pan American medal. I don’t have words to describe how satisfied I am, but well this is the beginning of what’s to come for next season, I hope everything continues to go well. I hoped to improve my personal record, but I am very proud and satisfied with the medals obtained for Cuba,” said Leyanis Perez.
